RE: Problem with my Lab, need help/advice

I agree with Colochoclab - if the pain killers were narcotic in nature - they might be giving the dog a case of nausea??? They certainly can do that to humans... and the dog's symptoms/actions sound like "colic" in horses - which basically means "stomach ache".

I can't say enough good about General RV in Grand Rapids (actually Wayland) - have always been treated courteously and any service was done by appointment and in a matter of hours.

RE: could I be THIS lucky?

Can I believe Diesel prices are going down!!!! If I only knew it was this easy...spend four months away at sea, and just let the price come down.
Some one is smiling...I hope I have not cursed myself now.
Anyhooo....just musing out loud as I sit at anchor off the Italian town of Sorrento.

Nope - you should be fine for your fun-sounding trip....because *WE* aren't going anywhere for a while. The fuel prices only rise when we plan a big sightseeing trip....LOL!!
Have a great time!

RE: Wheelbase - 190" vs 220" - area of concern?

We strongly considered the wheelbase ratio when we were looking at "C's". Ours is high 54%...and is pretty decent even in 25 mph+ crosswinds.

RE: OJ found guilty

I think many of you are forgetting that OJ was also tried in a civil suit - and found guilty. He owes the Goldman family millions of dollars - and this apparently had been brought up in the Vegas trial, to explain why Simpson was so adamant about getting his "stuff" back. He needed money.
So jurors who referred to the "previous trial" *may* have been referring to the civil suit?? I'd like to think they would have been fair.

RE: wild opossum

Still have a faint scar on my thumb from being bitten by one as a teen, they really do play opossum and can do it... well :B
My first encounter with an opossum was thinking the neighbor's dog had killed one - it was laying motionless in the yard. I put on a pair of gloves, and picked it up by the tail - about halfway to the garbage can, it "woke up" and was really irked about me carrying it!!! LOL!!! After THAT scare, I learned to pick them up with a shovel and carry them to the woods across the street, where they'd wake up and go about their business - the neighbor's dog never really hurt them.

RE: How do you train a dog about Traffic?

That is truly a life-saving skill.
A recall is so fundamental to a dog. It's like a child learning their ABC's.
I SO agree - especially after seeing the dead Sheltie that had escaped its owner while being brought to the groomer and had run into the street...a solid recall would have saved that dog's life :-(
I have always been able to call my dog off doing something wrong - but I can't supervise them every single minute. THAT'S why I used an e-collar: to teach my dogs that chasing cars is just a bad idea, whether Mom says no or not.....LOL!

RE: Poop Solution

I think all city parks should supply shovels for dog owners to pick up after their dogs, then there won't be a problem.
You'd think that would be the case...but no....
I was astounded to find random piles of dog poo at an RV park that was super-dog friendly - they even supplied "Mutt Mitts" - double-lined extra-thick, surely the Rolls-Royce of scooper bags..LOL!! ..at several points in the park for anyone to use. But obviously, those who won't pick up after their dogs will continue, despite the convenience to do the "proper thing"

RE: Who knows about Racing Pigeons?

I had a racing pigeon find me, many years ago. The numbers on his band WERE legible, so I found his owners. When they came to pick the bird up, they said that if he had been turned loose after a day or two of rest, he would have flown the rest of the way home.

RE: How do you train a dog about Traffic?

In defense of the e-collar in these situations:
My dogs are well-trained. The Cattle Dog has a bomb-proof recall that most Obedience competitors would drool over - I can call him off a "squirrel-chase".
But chasing cars/tractors/mowers, etc is an activity that can maim a dog (if he's lucky enough to live through the chase). My experience has been that ONE well-timed correction does the trick. Removes any desire they may have ever had to chase that particular object again because it "bites". And it surely seemed to work that way when Cesar used it to stop a dog from chasing the family's tractor - the dog had lost it's eye, and some teeth, and had its jaw broken in previous encounters with the tractor tires. One would *think* the dog would have learned after the first injury - but didn't. Only the e-collar stopped the behavior - probably because most animals (and humans) HATE being shocked ;-)
I cringe when I push the button on the transmitter - I've hit electric fences enough times to know what it feels like - but I'd rather shock once than risk a dead dog.

RE: How do you train a dog about Traffic?

A lot of dogs can't resist wheels going past at a fast clip...often to their demise. They seem particularly alluring to a herding-breed dog, for obvious reasons. I stopped my Cattle Dog from chasing after wheels with a well-timed correction from an electronic collar; and that surely does the trick! (In an episode of the Dog Whisperer, Cesar uses one to stop a Cattle Dog who chased the family tractor, even though the dog had been injured by it several times)
Without an e-collar, I'd simply stop the action with a snap of the leash and a firm "NO!" I really doubt scaring your dog about the outside of a car will affect their wanting to ride in YOUR car, where they are "Inside" and not chasing. It's the motion your dogs want to chase, not the vehicle.
Be diligent - this is one of those things that can save your dogs' lives.

RE: A Failed Economy

Dick A, that was a great post!! And now, armed with the hindsight of knowing the bailout "bombed" (at least for now) - now we can sit back and hopefully let some of the less-hasty and wise folks come up with better alternatives??
As someone who's been fiscally conservative all my life, it angered me to feel like we were being railroaded into "saving the country". Giving mountains of money to those who had NOT shown fiscal restraint in the past. And leaving our government in charge of private enterprise. Yes, "they" said we'd get our money back some day - do they really think we believed it???????
And yes, the Market is tanking. All those who were drooling at the thought of a monetary infusion are now panicked; but somehow, I feel like the wise and prudent people of the USA will continue to carry on.

I agree with the "marking" diagnosis.
Embarrassing story: we had gone to my daughter's house to see her new furniture. I noticed that her female dog's bed was right next to the new couch...and so did Jack the Cattle Dog. Guess what HE did right on the new couch......ugh.....

RE: Snooze Bonnet Question

If we're sitting in one spot for a few days, I use the outside bonnet. It seems we found ours online for around $35?
If just pulling in and parking overnight (and not wanting to put away a wet bonnet first thing in the AM) - I use my set of interior-mounted Easy Curtains for privacy.
Keeping the windshield clean is sort of a moot point for us, since we gather so many bugs and assorted glop during our travels.....
